This USD 603,000 project is co-financed by UNICEF and WaterWorX, with a contribution from Luang Namtha Province. It aims to provide communities in Vieng Phoukha District, Luang Namtha Province with access to clean and safe water in line with the Lao PDR water supply strategy and SDG 6, while strengthening local capacity and knowledge in water supply system implementation and service delivery to enhance resilience to climate change.

The Namfa Village Group was severely affected by a storm in July 2022, which damaged natural water sources and disrupted the community’s water supply. Increasing climate-related risks, pollution, sedimentation, and debris have further affected water availability for household use, agriculture, and daily activities.

The project aims to develop a climate-resilient water supply system serving approximately 2,000 people or 354 households across five villages. The first phase will serve Ban Namfa, Ban Namkieng, and Ban Lamon that connect firstly into 3 villages: Ban Namfa, Ban Namkieng, and Ban Lamon., with future expansion planned for Ban PhonTong and Ban NamNgern.

The scope of services includes geological surveys, water supply system analysis and design, architectural and engineering design, and consultancy for construction, water infrastructure, and environmental measures, with climate resilience integrated throughout the project.

Ultimately, the project aims to improve the quality of life, health, and livelihoods of local communities by providing reliable access to clean water while strengthening the long-term resilience and sustainability of water supply infrastructure in Vieng Phoukha District.
